Welcome to the National Electronics Recycling Infrastructure Clearinghouse (NERIC)! The NERIC initiative is a jointly funded project of the National Center for Electronics Recycling (NCER) and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).
New NERIC Information
Updated Per Capita Collection Index Released
In 2007, NERIC developed the initial baseline value of per capita collection volumes using six ongoing recycling programs across the United States using 2006 data. Now with the input of the 2007 data from these programs, the NCER has calculated the first per capita collection index (PCCI) for electronics recycling. This index measures collection amounts of used electronic equipment such as computers, televisions and monitors. A rising per capita index indicates an increase in the collection of e-waste across the programs included in the index and suggests a similar trend nation-wide. The 2007 PCCI value was 14% higher than in 2006. For more information, see the Press Release and PCCI page.
Analysis Chart of Maine Program from January-July 2007
The NCER has compiled a new analysis chart based on the results of the first half of 2007 under the Maine E-Waste Law. The chart has a complete breakdown of the volume collected by product category and claim status, in addition to data on the total number of brands returned and their respective manufacturer/a. Here are a few highlights from the data:
-
On an annualized basis, the program will collect approximately 3.25lb/capita in 2007. This compares to 3.1 lbs/capita collected in 2006.
-
As in 2006, 70% of the weight returned during this time period was from TVs. The rest of the volume can be attributed to monitors and laptops.
-
By total weight, orphan brands represented 4.5% of the total returns. Within the TV category, orphans were 1.75% of the weight. Within the monitor category, they were 11% of the weight
NERIC Compliance Calendar (January 2008) In order to provide information to manufacturers and retailers about complying with the patchwork of state recycling requirements, NERIC has developed a Compliance Calendar that lists key tasks for each state with legislated electronics recycling programs. The calendar lists key tasks, timeframes, and links to each respective task's web page and can be export to Excel or directly into your calendar. The Compliance Calendar is available at:

NERIC Workshop at 2008 International CES - Presentation Available
NERIC held a workshop at the 2008 International CES in Las Vegas titled "Complying with the Patchwork: A Primer on State Electronics Requirements." The sessionhighlighted manufacturer and retailer requirements regarding the financing and recycling of used televisions and computer equipment. Eight U.S. states, encompassing 30 million US residents, have now enacted varied approaches to mandatory producer financing and implementation of recycling programs. An expanded version of the presentation is now available.
TWO NEW NERIC REPORTS: Summary of Recent EU Studies on WEEE Directive and Minnesota Due Diligence
Through the NERIC project, the NCER has developed two new reports with key information for electronics recycling stakeholders. The first summarizes the main points of two recent studies of the European Union's WEEE Directive. The second is a background document and checklist for performing a due diligence on registered recyclers participating in the Minnesota law program. Follow the links for a brief description and to download the reports.
Documentation Forms for New Minnesota Program - UPDATED (November 2007)
The NCER has updated the collector and recycler documentation forms that can be used to verify pounds collected and recycled under the new Minnesota electronics recycling law.
New NERIC Reports on Maine and Minnesota Programs Posted Online (July 2007)
Two new NERIC reports have been published on the NERIC Reports page. The first is a summary of the Minnesota Stakeholder Meeting on their new electronics recycling law. The second is a report from a set of meetings with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and one consolidator operating under the state electronics recycling program.
Implementation of State Electronics Recycling Programs
NERIC has compiled the latest statistics on the progress of state electronics recycling programs in California, Maine, Maryland and Washington. This resource page includes details on funding, administration, and recycling results.
